White patches on the skin can occur because of various reasons.  People are scared of white patches because both vitiligo (called leucoderma by some) and leprosy (Hansen’s disease) are associated with social taboo.  There are also concerns about whether these patches are contagious and whether they can pass on to future generations.  Counseling here is as important as accurate diagnosis and treatment.  White patches can also be caused by worm infestation, due to allergy to the sun’s UV rays, due to very dry skin, etc.  There are good treatments available for all kinds of white patches, including vitiligo.  Some kinds of white patches respond slowly and it is important to be patient and to stick to the treatment regime.
